Pan shares his makeup story
- How did you get into artistry?
I’ve been passionate about art since I was very young. It started with sketching and drawing, then eventually fell in love with Halloween makeup . From there, I began exploring beauty and editorial makeup in a deeper way. YouTube was also a huge part of that! I’ve always been fascinated by fashion and editorial imagery ever since I was a child, I would spend hours flipping through magazines, creating collages from my favourite looks and finding inspiration in the creativity of each image. Looking back, artistry has always been a part of who I am.
- What does being a makeup artist mean to you?
Being a makeup artist is so much more than just a job. There’s something truly special about seeing a client or model look in the mirror and light up with confidence. It’s about making people feel something, whether that’s empowered, beautiful, creative, or simply more like themselves.
A lot of people see makeup as a way to hide insecurities or imperfections, but I think it’s important to remember that makeup is also an art form. It’s a powerful means of self-expression, creativity, and storytelling, and that’s what I love most about it.
- What VIEVE product do you always keep in your kit, and why?
Without a doubt, Skin Dew. It instantly transforms the skin, giving it the most beautiful healthy, fresh, and radiant glow. It’s one of those products that works on everyone and always elevates the final look.
I also love Sunset Blush Balm. The formula is incredibly easy to work with, the shades are gorgeous, and it creates the perfect flush of colour. Whether you want a subtle veil of colour or something a little more impactful, it brings life back into the complexion effortlessly.
- What advice would you give to aspiring makeup artists?
My biggest piece of advice is: don’t compare yourself to others. Unfortunately, this industry can sometimes be filled with unhealthy competition, and it’s easy to get caught up in what everyone else is doing.
Instead, focus on learning from artists you admire. Study their work, figure out what inspires you about it, and don’t be afraid to reach out and ask questions. Most importantly, take the time to discover your own style and what makes your artistry unique. Inspiration is everywhere you just have to take that first step and trust your creative instincts.
- Who are your biggest artistic influences (in or outside of makeup)?
I have so many influences. I love revisiting runway shows, especially from past decades, because I find them incredibly inspiring. The creativity and storytelling behind designers like John Galliano and Marc Jacobs, particularly in the early 2000s, continue to influence the way I think about beauty and fashion.
In makeup, Pat McGrath is a constant source of inspiration. She always pushes boundaries and creates unforgettable looks. I also admire Mario Dedivanovic’s work, his artistry is so refined, glamorous, and beautifully executed.
More recently, I’ve found myself inspired by Australian makeup artists. Their approach feels fresh, innovative, and exciting, and I think they’re producing some incredible work right now.
- What makes a great MUA in your eyes — beyond technique?
Technique is important, but what truly sets a great makeup artist apart is vision. Every product placement, colour choice, and detail should have a purpose. It’s about understanding how to enhance someone’s features while creating a look that feels intentional and cohesive.
Hygiene is also non-negotiable and should always be a priority. Beyond that, attitude and professionalism matter just as much as skill. When someone sits in your chair, you’re often more than their makeup artist—you’re their confidant, their listener, and sometimes even their therapist for the day. Creating a comfortable, positive experience is just as important as creating a beautiful makeup look.
